Where it all began

I’d sit there for hours. In total amazement. Utterly transfixed. A boxset of videos on the natural world. The unmistakable voice of David Attenborough. I must have worn them out. That was the moment when a spark of fascination lit inside me. One that would take me to remote parts of the world.

It lead me to travelling to different parts of Indonesia and Borneo, on what seemed like a pilgrimage hoping to find all of the wonderful sights that I had watched so many times on Natural World every Sunday. I arrived with so much anticipation and excitement, imagining wandering through the rainforest with parrots flying overhead, howler monkeys screeching in the distance, vibrantly coloured frogs, huge trees and vines all around me.

Yet, instead what I found was not at all what I imagined, there were no parrots flying overhead, no wild orang-utans, no flowers the size of dinner plates. Instead however there were mile after mile of the same type of tree. As far as the eye could see, in neat rows. It was instead a sea of palm oil trees. I was left stunned, something changed in me.

It wasn’t until I met a British filmmaker that was commissioned to document these events taking place in Borneo who put it into context for me. I was alarmed to hear about the scale of the destruction.

By growing crops the ecosystem gets polluted through the spreading of pesticides into the water cycle but with a single crop a monoculture is created where not much can survive. Flora and fauna have evolved over millions of years to depend on the variety that each of them bring to the ecosystem.

A clean page

Since then I knew that I would try to make a difference in some way or another – and in doing so I want to document my journey with you, share my experience of creating something that I believe can have a positive impact on the world. The reason for Salient’s existence and the true purpose of the brand is:

  • To protect the habitats & the animals of the Borneo region, to do this we want to protect 1000 hectares of rainforest by 2020

I want my future children to have the same feeling I had when I was a child - that feeling of amazement and awe that comes with watching the natural world. It is something so unique, and as humans we have become so disconnected from it.

“There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try and those who are afraid you will succeed.”

Ray Goforth

I know there is a ray of hope – because I am safe in the knowledge that there are thousands, if not millions, of people that feel the same way as me and that are working extremely hard to help protect the natural world.

The power is in our hands, we now have a voice and can make a change. We can be disruptive, we don’t have to live by the status quo, or by how huge corporations say we have to live anymore.

There are other options open to us. Options created by those passionate people such as ourselves who want to provide a better future for us all - with honesty and transparency at their cores. With care and a commitment to making a change.

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
